About Mike Zagare, founder of Knuckle
Mike Zagare has started three software companies and sold his last one, PPC Entourage, in 2021. He has spent his career building things. For most of it, he was building them wired.
Twenty-five years, fully caffeinated
For 25 years, Mike ran on 500 to 600mg of caffeine a day. Three strong cups from the french press before the day started. A large cold brew at his desk to push through the afternoon. He built companies out of Starbucks on artificial urgency, and told himself the jitters and the stress were just the price of ambition. Caffeine wasn't a habit. It was the operating system.
Quitting didn't work
He tried to stop more than once. Every time, it went the same way. The headache by the afternoon. The fog. The flatness. A day or two of white-knuckling, and then back to the french press, because he had a company to run and quitting felt like it cost more than it was worth. Cold turkey wasn't a plan. It was just suffering with no system behind it.
So he built the taper
Instead of quitting, he engineered a way down. Caffeine pills so he could lower the dose by precise amounts over four weeks, instead of guessing with cups. Water-process decaf brewed in the same mug, the same way, so the ritual stayed while the chemical left. Small adjustments to support his nervous system as it recalibrated. It was gradual enough that he got through the whole thing with almost no headaches. He kept working. He kept showing up. He never lost a day.
The other side
Today Mike is caffeine-free. Better sleep. Steadier energy that doesn't spike and crash. Lower anxiety. The thing he was most afraid of losing, his edge, is the thing that actually came back.
"The breakthrough wasn't quitting caffeine. It was no longer needing it."
Why Knuckle
Knuckle is the protocol he wished he'd had from the start. The free app turns what you drink now into a personalized day-by-day taper, so you don't have to engineer your own or white-knuckle it. The Reset Kit, launching soon, packages the physical pieces that made his own taper work. The whole point is that coming off caffeine shouldn't require losing a week of your life.
The Taper
Mike writes The Taper every week, about the taper itself, the science underneath it, and what the other side actually feels like. Read it at mikezagare.substack.com, or find his articles on the Knuckle blog.
